CELLULOSE INSULATION
For years, fiberglass insulation was the standard bearer when it came to insulating your home or business. However, cellulose insulation has come to be a strong contender for that title. Whether it’s blown in loose in your attic or dense-packed in the walls, cellulose insulation has incredible insulation power and a high R-value that resists heat flow or the loss of heat in your home. In the North country, heat loss is a big deal. In 2019, the New England region ranked second in the nation for the total number of degree days (the higher the number, the higher the energy consumption). Here are some of the benefits of cellulose insulation:
First, cellulose insulation is a green product. Typically, cellulose is comprised of 80% post-consumer product. This makes cellulose doubly good for the environment. It doesn’t require entirely new product. It recycles old product. In one estimate, it was suggested that insulating one, 1500 square foot house could recycle as much newspaper material as an individual could consume in 40 years. That’s a lot of paper product removed from the waste stream! Plus, the more it helps reduce the amount of energy consumed by your home or place of business, the more it benefits the environment.
Second, cellulose insulation is a safe product. While cellulose is made out of paper product, it is treated in such a way as to guarantee permanent fire resistance. While some have argued that the composition of cellulose makes it a higher risk than fiberglass, independent studies have shown that cellulose may actually be more fire-resistant than fiberglass due to the special resistance treatment it receives n the manufacturing process.
Third, cellulose insulation provides excellent resistance against air-flow. While the proper application of fiberglass insulation can help stop air flow, nothing can compete with simplicity and effectiveness of densely packed cellulose insulation. If you’re looking to improve the energy efficiency of your home or business, or you want to do it right from the start in a new building project, cellulose insulation may be the perfect solution.
